Face Crib (Face Brace)
A face crib, or face brace, is the common name for an orthopedic protraction reverse pull headgear. It is a commonly used appliance in orthodontics for children that pulls the entire upper jaw forward and corrects a bite where the lower jaw is in front of the upper jaw. It is used in conjunction with a rapid palatal expander under the careful supervision of a trained orthodontist.
How Does It Work?
The face brace has pads that rest on the forehead and chin, connected by a metal bar between them, which is is used to attach rubber bands to hooks that are built into your expander. The rubber bands must be worn on a regular basis, often while patient is asleep, to achieve the desired orthopedic results. The pressure from the rubber bands pulls the upper jaw forward, correcting the problem slowly each night.

How Long Are They Worn?
A face brace is usually worn every night for about six months. Your orthodontist will evaluate you on a regular basis to check your jaw growth and measure changes closely.
Do Face Cribs Change Your Face?
The goal of any orthopedic appliance is to correct a skeletal problem where moving bone is the only proper solution. Changes in the face can be minor or very noticeable, depending on the severity of the case. Patients are typically very pleased with the aesthetic changes caused by wearing a face brace. After correcting the alignment issues, the mouth and jawline will look more symmetrical and natural. Functionally, patients are also relieved to have a healthy bite that comes together properly.

A face brace is used when the lower jaw comes together in front of the upper jaw, often called an underbite. Left untreated, an underbite can cause abnormal wear and tear on the permanent teeth resulting in tooth erosion and complications with TMJ. The best time to solve bite problems are during childhood before growth has stopped.
